![]() ![]() I'm just saying that for what a Montage actually is, an entry price below $3,000 (blemished or used) is a pretty great deal. I'm certainly not shitting on DAWs or softsynths. People roll their eyes at a $6,000 effects processor and then promptly understand when they plug their bass guitar into it. When you compare the piano libraries of a Kronos to something like "Komplete Keys" for Kontakt, or even those 20gb libraries that require a RAM upgrade to even load properly, the Kronos is still going to sound more natural because the samples are using their own modeling engine, an engine designed for a specific piece of hardware (the keys, pedal).Īnother easy comparison is literally any VST effect against an Eventide H8000. The architecture of the Montage has multiple processors, synchronized with the OS, handling all of these different things. If they were, they'd simply max out your CPU with a quarter of the FM layers before you even applied spectral forms. ![]() If you compare that to something like Serum or Omnisphere, they're not even in the same ballpark. A single patch can have 8 spectral forms, unlimited envelopes, 88 FM layers, and multiple, incredible sounding effects patches. That being said, the Montage is a lot more powerful than any softsynth I've come across. You'd be better off spending that money on an Octatrack and perhaps an MPC to put next to it. It has a very barebones sequencer as it's technically not a workstation. But ultimately, I like using my ears more than my eyes, and I use a guitar, bass, and sometimes V-Drums on stage, so that makes it easier to not need a laptop.įor live performing, I think you could do better than a Montage. That being said, today's laptops could be a little better if you're using an SSD because you have less moving parts that are sensitive to vibration on stage. Still, something always crept in and distracted me or interrupted my workflow on stage. I had a dual boot Windows config, one would be normal crap like Skype and Chrome for between gigs, the other would be nothing but the OS essentials, my audio driver, and my set. This somehow resulted in me having 7 or 8 laptops stacked on a shelf. I'd have to buy a new one on the road and get it gig-ready in panic mode, then RMA the old one when I got home. Honestly, I'd go through a laptop every 6 months. I've avoided using a computer live since 2010 or so (4 of those years with lots of touring).
